Square still earns its place for grid aesthetics and product tiles; landscape is a deliberate choice for genuinely wide scenes, accepted at the cost of feed presence.
The 2026 wrinkle: 3:4 grid thumbnails
Instagram now previews profile-grid thumbnails in 3:4 rather than square. Your 4:5 posts lose a thin slice top and bottom in the grid view — nothing dramatic, but keep faces, text and logos out of the outer ~10% and both the feed and your grid stay clean.
