Pro Tips for Better Quality

Always use 1080px width

Instagram displays at 1080px. Larger images get compressed and may lose quality.

Export as JPEG for photos

JPEG provides the best quality-to-size ratio. Use PNG only for graphics with text.

Use 4:5 for maximum visibility

Portrait posts take up 20% more screen space than square posts in the feed.

Keep safe zones in mind for Reels

UI elements cover top and bottom. Keep important content in the center 80%.

Frequently asked questions

The 4:5 portrait format (1080 x 1350 pixels) typically gets the highest engagement because it takes up more screen space in the feed, making your content more visible. Studies show portrait posts get 30-40% more engagement than square posts on average.

Instagram will automatically crop or resize your image to fit. This can result in important parts of your image being cut off or reduced quality. For best results, always resize your images before uploading to match Instagram's recommended dimensions.

Instagram allows photos up to 30MB. For videos, the maximum file size is 650MB for videos up to 10 minutes, and 3.6GB for videos up to 60 minutes. However, Instagram compresses all uploads, so the actual quality may be reduced.

Always use 1080 pixels as your base width. Instagram displays images at 1080px wide, so anything larger gets compressed. For height, use 1080px (square), 1350px (portrait), or 566px (landscape) depending on your aspect ratio.

Instagram Reels use the same 9:16 vertical format as Stories (1080 x 1920 pixels). However, keep in mind that Reels can also appear in the feed where they may be cropped to 4:5, so keep important content centered.

All images in a carousel must be the same aspect ratio. The first image you add determines the ratio for all subsequent slides. Most creators use either 1:1 (1080 x 1080px) or 4:5 (1080 x 1350px) for carousels.
