Link in bio, done right.
5 native links. 30 seconds. No tools.

Instagram still won't make caption links clickable — but the bio now holds up to five real links, natively. Here's how to add them, why yours might not work, and when a link-in-bio tool still earns its keep in 2026.

Put a link in your bio 🔗

1

Edit profile → Links

On your profile, tap 'Edit profile', then the 'Links' row.

2

Add external link

Tap 'Add external link', paste the full URL (with https://) and give it a short title — the title is what people see.

3

Add more & reorder

Repeat up to 5 links total. Drag to reorder — only the first shows directly on your profile; the rest live behind '+ X more'.

💡 What to link

Six links that earn their slot

Shop or product page

The classic. Send profile visitors straight to the thing you sell — first link slot, always.

Latest video or episode

YouTube, podcast, TikTok — rotate the link when you publish, mention it in the caption.

Newsletter signup

The only follower Instagram can't take away from you. A signup page converts warm profile visits.

Event or booking page

Drops, gigs, appointments — time-limited links are exactly what the first slot is for.

Portfolio or CV

For freelancers and creators: one link that answers 'what do you actually do?'

A landing page (if you must)

Linktree-style hubs still make sense past 5 links or when you need click analytics — otherwise skip the extra tap.

🧠 Strategy

The bio link is your only exit — treat it like one

Instagram is built to keep people inside Instagram: captions don't link, comments don't link, and the one sanctioned exit is the link block on your profile. That scarcity is exactly why “link in bio” became a phrase — and why what you put there deserves more thought than it usually gets. Every profile visit is someone deciding, in a few seconds, whether you're worth following or clicking. The bio link is the clicking half of that decision.

Since Instagram raised the native limit to five links, the default advice has flipped. The old pattern — one link, pointing at a Linktree — made sense when one was all you got. Now the middleman page mostly adds a tap and a load screen between your audience and the destination. Native links win on friction; third-party hubs win when you genuinely need more than five destinations, click analytics, or a page that doubles as a mini-site. Choose based on which of those you actually use, not on habit.

Order, titles, and the one-slot reality

Only your first link renders directly on the profile — the rest hide behind a “+ X more” tap that most visitors never make. So order ruthlessly: the current campaign first, the evergreen shop or portfolio second, everything else after. Give links short human titles (“New drop 🔥”, not a raw URL), and rotate the top slot when priorities change. Pair the link with a bio that sells the click and a clean visual style, and the profile starts doing conversion work on its own.

Stories: the other clickable surface

The link sticker made stories every account's second linking surface — no follower minimum since 2021. Stickers can be renamed, so label them like buttons (“Get tickets”) instead of leaving the raw domain. Stories also solve the “link for one post” problem the bio can't: caption says “link in story”, story carries the sticker, bio stays evergreen.

Measure the only metric that matters

A bio link exists to convert profile visits — so watch whether it does. Instagram's insights show taps for professional accounts; the deeper question is whether the posts driving those profile visits also drive follows. That's follower-tracking territory: the followers tracker ties your gains to your posting timeline, and follower analytics tells you whether the new arrivals are real people or passers-by. Traffic without retention is a leak, not a funnel.

💬 Frequently asked

Link in bio, answered

How do I add a link to my Instagram bio?

Profile → Edit profile → Links → Add external link. Paste the URL, optionally give it a title, and save. It appears under your bio immediately and is tappable for everyone — no follower minimum, no special account type required.

How many links can I have in my Instagram bio?

Up to five external links, right in the native Links section — no third-party tool required. Only the first one shows directly on your profile; the rest sit behind a '+ and X more' tap. Order them so the link you care about most is first.

Why can't people click the link in my bio caption?

Because URLs pasted into the bio text (or captions) are plain text — Instagram only makes links clickable in the dedicated Links section, in stories via the link sticker, and in DMs. Move the URL into Edit profile → Links and it becomes tappable.

Do I still need a Linktree-style tool?

Only if five links aren't enough or you want extras like click analytics, scheduling or a branded landing page. For most accounts, Instagram's native five links replaced the basic use case — and skipping the middleman page means one less tap between your audience and the destination.

Can I put links in Instagram stories?

Yes — every account can use the link sticker in stories, regardless of follower count (the old 10k 'swipe up' requirement is long gone). Add the sticker, paste the URL, and optionally rename its label so it reads like a button.

What does 'link in bio' actually mean?

It's the standard workaround for Instagram's no-clickable-links-in-captions rule: creators say 'link in bio' in a post and put the actual URL on their profile. The phrase stuck as the name for the whole practice — and the industry of tools around it.

Why is my bio link not working?

Usual causes: the URL is missing https://, the site is blocked by Instagram (spammy or flagged domains get refused), or you typed it into the bio text instead of the Links section. Edit profile → Links, paste the full URL including https://, and test it from another account.

Does the link in bio help with the algorithm or SEO?

Not directly — Instagram links are no-follow and the algorithm doesn't rank you higher for having one. Its value is conversion: it's the single place profile visitors can actually leave Instagram to reach your shop, video or site, which is why optimizing what sits there matters more than how many links you cram in.
