The etiquette is simple: credit travels with content
Every built-in repost route — story reshares, Reel reposts, tagged-story shares — credits the creator automatically, which is why they're always the safe choice. The only route without automatic credit is the download-and-re-upload feed repost, and that's exactly where the rules bite: it's someone else's content, so permission first, credit always, and tag them on the photo. Accounts that skip this step get posts removed and, repeatedly, get reported.
Collab posts beat reposts
If the goal is sharing someone's post with your audience on your feed, a collab post does it better: the creator invites you, the post lives on both profiles, and likes and comments pool into one count. It turns a repost from a copy into a shared original — and the algorithm treats it accordingly.
Reposting as a growth tactic
Story reshares of posts you're tagged in are the highest-value repost: they show social proof to your audience and goodwill to the creator. How do I repost someone's Instagram post to my story?

How do I repost a post to my own feed?
Instagram has no native feed-repost button. The clean options: ask the creator for a collab invite (best reach), use Instagram's 'Add to your story' then highlight it, or — with the creator's permission — download and re-upload with credit. Third-party 'repost apps' mostly automate that last flow.
How do I repost a Reel?
Reels have a built-in Remix and a Reshare option: tap the share icon → 'Add to story', or use the Repost button where available (Instagram has been rolling out native reposts to feeds in some regions). Remix lets you add your own video alongside theirs.
Why can't I repost someone's post?
Three usual reasons: their account is private (private content can't be reshared), they've turned off resharing to stories in their settings, or the content type doesn't support it. If 'Add to story' is missing, one of those is why.
Do I need permission to repost?
For story-reshares via the built-in button, no — that's what the feature is for, and the original creator is always credited automatically. For downloading and re-uploading to your feed, yes: it's their content, and reposting without permission can get the post removed or your account reported.
How do I repost a story I'm tagged in?
When someone mentions you in their story, you get a DM with 'Add this to your story'. Tap it and share. If the button is missing, they either didn't @-mention you or their story-sharing settings don't allow it.
