Unblock in two taps
1. Settings and privacy
Profile → menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → scroll to 'Blocked'.
2. Your blocked list
Everyone you've ever blocked, in one list. This is also the answer to 'who have I blocked over the years?'
3. Tap Unblock
Instant, silent — they get no notification. Their view of your profile is restored.
4. Refollow (optional)
The old mutual follow is gone for good. Following again is a fresh request they'll see like any other.
Unblocking reopens the door. It doesn't rebuild the bridge.
A block severs both follow relationships at the moment it's applied — and unblocking doesn't reverse that. Neither of you follows the other afterward, and messages sent during the blocked period never arrive, even retroactively. What does come back: their view of your profile, the old DM thread, and the ability to interact. If reconnecting is the goal, budget for the refollow being visible — on a private account, it's a request they must approve.
The cooldown people mistake for a bug
After unblocking someone, Instagram may prevent you from blocking them again for up to 48 hours — an anti-harassment measure against block/unblock cycling. If you're unblocking just to check something quickly, know that the door can't be immediately closed again. How do I unblock someone on Instagram?
Settings and privacy → Blocked → find them in the list → tap Unblock. Or, if you know their username, visit their profile (search won't show them — use a tag, DM thread or direct URL) and tap Unblock there.
Where is my blocked list?
Profile → menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → scroll to 'Blocked'. The full list of everyone you've ever blocked lives there, with an Unblock button next to each.
Does unblocking restore the follow?
No — blocking severed both follow relationships permanently. After unblocking, neither of you follows the other; refollowing is a fresh, visible follow request. Plan for that if the account is private.
Will they know I unblocked them?
No notification is sent. They can only infer it: your profile becomes visible to them again, and if you refollow, that follow appears like any other.
Why can't I unblock and refollow immediately?
Instagram enforces a cooldown: after unblocking someone, you may need to wait up to 48 hours before you can block them again, and occasionally the refollow is briefly delayed. If buttons seem stuck, wait a day and retry.
Do old DMs come back after unblocking?
The conversation thread reappears in your inbox (it never truly left), but messages they sent while blocked are gone — blocked-period messages are never delivered, even retroactively.
