Long-press their note at the top of your DM inbox → Mute notes.
Their DMs
In the thread: tap their name → Mute messages (or call notifications). The chat stays; the pings stop.

Mute is the tool for people you can't unfollow
The colleague, the cousin, the friend-of-friends whose content exhausts you — unfollowing any of them is a visible act: your name leaves their follower list, and anyone running an unfollower tracker gets told by name. Muting produces the same quiet feed without the paper trail: the follow stays, their count stays, and Instagram exposes no muted list to anyone but you. It's the difference between leaving the room and turning down the volume.
Mute vs. restrict vs. block — the escalation ladder
Muting fixes your feed. If the problem is what someone does on your posts — uncomfortable comments, unwanted attention — Restrict is the next rung: their comments go invisible to everyone but them. And when someone shouldn't see you at all, blocking ends the relationship both ways (here's what a block looks like from the other side, and how to undo one). Most feed problems die at the first rung.
Curating the feed you actually want
A round of muting is feed hygiene — and it pairs well with an audience cleanup in the other direction: the ghost-followers check finds the inactive accounts inflating your numbers, and who doesn't follow back shows where your attention isn't returned. Quiet feed, honest audience.

How do I mute someone on Instagram?
Go to their profile → tap Following → Mute → toggle Posts, Stories, or both. Or, from your feed: tap the three dots on one of their posts → Hide → Mute. They're not notified, and you stay following each other.
Will they know I muted them?
No. There's no notification, no visible marker, and no list they can check. Your like and comment activity continues to look normal — the only change is that their content stops appearing in your feed and story bar.
What's the difference between mute and unfollow?
Muting keeps the follow relationship intact — they see you as a follower, you can still visit their profile — but their content disappears from your feed. Unfollowing removes you from their follower count, which people notice (and trackers detect). Muting is the diplomatic option.
Can I mute someone's DMs or notes too?
Yes. In the DM thread, tap their name → toggle 'Mute messages' or 'Mute call notifications'. Notes can be muted by long-pressing their note at the top of your inbox and choosing mute.
How do I unmute someone?
Their profile → Following → Mute → toggle off. Or Settings and privacy → Muted accounts shows everyone you've muted in one list — the fastest way if you don't remember who you've muted over the years.
How do I know if someone muted me?
You can't — Instagram exposes nothing. The closest proxy: someone who used to react to your stories consistently and abruptly stopped, while still liking your feed posts occasionally. But there's no way to confirm; muting is designed to be invisible.
