Go to your profile, tap the menu (≡) top right, then 'Settings and activity'.
Messages and story replies
Scroll to 'How others can interact with you' and tap 'Messages and story replies' → 'Show activity status'.
Toggle it off
Flip 'Show activity status' off. The green dot and 'Active now' label vanish for everyone, instantly — and theirs vanish for you.

Should you turn it off? The honest calculus
The case for hiding the dot writes itself: nobody needs an hourly report of your screen time. The dot turns “I'll reply later” into “seen you online, why the silence?”, feeds every anxious what-are-they-doing spiral, and — since it fires while you merely scroll — reports activity that has nothing to do with conversations. For anyone dodging an ex, a pushy group chat, or a boss with DM energy, the toggle is self-defense.
The cost is symmetry. Instagram enforces the mutual rule with no exceptions: hide yours, lose everyone else's. If knowing when a friend comes online is how you time your messages, that information goes dark with your dot. There is no app, trick or “ghost mode” that breaks the symmetry — services promising to show hidden activity status are lying, and often phishing. Most people, having weighed it, keep the status off and simply… reply when they reply. Radical, effective.
The privacy stack: status, receipts, quiet mode, restrict
Activity status is one layer of four. Read receipts (same settings screen) hide the “Seen” label so unanswered messages stop being evidence. Quiet mode pauses notifications on a schedule and auto-replies to DMs — the guilt-free night shift. Restrict applies the invisibility to one person instead of everyone: no activity status, no read receipts, comments only they can see. Stack them to taste; together they cover essentially every “leave me alone without drama” scenario Instagram supports. And if you're silencing a person rather than the app, muting completes the kit.
What hiding your status can't hide
The toggle controls presence, not activity. Your likes and comments stay public, your story views still land in viewer lists, and new follows remain visible in your public following list — where anyone with a follow tracker can read them. Going dot-less makes you unwatchable in real time, not untraceable in public. Worth knowing both directions: the same public signals are how you can quietly keep up with anyone else's account, green dot or no green dot.

How do I turn off my active status on Instagram?
Open your profile → menu (≡) → Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Show activity status → toggle it off. The green dot and 'Active now' label disappear immediately for everyone.
What does the green dot on Instagram mean?
It's the activity status indicator: a green dot next to a profile picture in DMs and the share sheet means that person is on Instagram right now. 'Active today' or 'Active 3h ago' labels show when they last were. Turning off your activity status removes both for your account.
If I turn off active status, can I still see when others are online?
No — it's strictly mutual. Disable your activity status and Instagram hides everyone else's from you too. There's no setting, trick or app that gets you one-way visibility.
Can I hide my active status from specific people only?
Not through the activity setting — it's all or nothing. Workarounds: restrict a person (Restricted accounts never see your activity status or read receipts) or mute the conversation and reply on your own schedule.
Does turning off active status hide that I read messages?
No — those are separate settings. Activity status controls the green dot; read receipts control the 'Seen' label. Since 2024 Instagram lets you turn off read receipts too: Settings → Messages and story replies → Read receipts.
Will people know I turned my status off?

Does active status show while I'm just scrolling?

Is there a difference between active status and quiet mode?
