In order: use the banner button at the top of the chat instead of the gesture (the swipe competes with scrolling and loses on some devices). Send one message, then swipe — an empty vanish thread sometimes ignores the exit gesture. Force-close the app and reopen the chat. Still dark? What vanish mode is actually for
Instagram built it for the “this shouldn't live in a scrollback” conversation: an address, a surprise plan, a vent. Once seen and closed, the messages leave both sides of the thread — genuinely useful when the alternative is a permanent transcript. What it is not is a safety guarantee. The other person's screenshot still works (you get notified, but notified isn't prevented), a second phone pointed at the screen works silently, and reported messages survive for review. The rule that never fails: ephemerality changes where words are stored, not whether they happened. Write accordingly.
